My First Novella

Well, while my last few stories that have been published as a means to get my name out there, my next release is all my own. My new novella, entitled LUST, will be released in paperback and eBook this September. The novella, just under 20k words started out as a screenplay I was writing while in my MFA program. As things often happen, life got in the way and whatever floppy disk it was on disappeared with my moving and time marching on in general. When I sat down to write a longer piece of fiction I remembered the genesis of the idea for Lust, and it just flowed right out of me.  It will be available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Booksamillion, and other retailers. I will soon upload the cover art work with the back description of the book. But for now here is the title with my name. I think it looks awesome, what about you?

Writing for free PART DEUX

Well, I didn't win a few contests I had entered which were announced yesterday. But I was able to get a new story into the EZINE Sirens Call. I am waiting to hear back from them. While I do like write, sometimes narrowing down ideas can be a bit difficult so I do like it when there is a theme. It gets me pissed at first because I am like what the hell can I do with that? Then, slowly it begins, sometimes a bit too slowly, then the floodgates open. The piece I started for Sirens Call was going to be flash fiction then I overshot the word count and was still not done, so I reworked the story and just made the word count max. It was a good feeling to finish something, something that I believe is very good. Even if it is not accepted into the EZINE, I have another story under my belt, and my writing output, in general, is gaining momentum. I have finished a novella that I am going to be shopping around, and have another novella that I am, sadly, dragging my feet on. Once that is done I will shop that one around too.

I am still thinking about the writers with name recognition that are upset with people like myself that are not in the publics eye giving stories to anthologies for "free" for said name recognition. I know how hard it was for you to break in and how hard it is to "break in" in general, but why is there such an animosity for doing this? It makes no sense to me. Many of these authors are selling ebooks almost exclusively. So am I.

My book was not selling, no one knows me. Putting my stories in a book with other authors and having it reviewed, hopefully, I will find an audience, and I can sell my novellas and my novels. Until then what is the problem with finding an anthology that "will make money on writers stories" if the mere exposure can help?

Any opinions? Please leave me a comment.

Writing for Free.

It seems there is a cadre of authors out there, some who have had marginal success, and some who have had a good deal of it, who are against new writers who want to get their name out there. Let me clarify. They are not against us personally, but the fact that some of us publish our stories for free in anthologies. Now these anthologies can be purchased on line and in stores, both in eBook and paperback, but the authors receive no residuals. I will be the first to say it sucks. However, the point for me, and I think many others in my place, is to have a story in a book that people will read so when I am out there on my own, or try to get something else done, my name will be recognized. Some say I will be known for giving away my work and now one will want to pay me ever. Etc, etc. Recently a review for a book I was in got a good review and it mentioned some of the authors in it who were also unpaid, and it went on to say there were some good stories by writers new to the reviewer. That's my point. If the story was enjoyed, or just liked or even so horrible it was remembered there is that recognition that maybe next time I will have a reader eager to pick something up I wrote. And if not, who cares? It is my story and I can do whatever I want with it, or am I wrong?
